Gray veined kitchen tile floor
A kitchen floor in large, light gray tile with soft veining, set in a straight grid around a black island and off-white cabinetry.

In an open kitchen, the floor is the one surface you see from every direction. We started the layout from the island rather than from a wall, so the grid lines up with the thing your eye goes to first.
The cabinet run curves at one end, and there is a floor register and a glass door to work around. Those cuts were planned before any tile went down, which kept the pieces at the edges a usable size instead of thin strips.
The grout is close to the tile color. The grid stays tidy, and the veining does the talking.
